The Kent State University soccer team (10-1-1, 7-0-0 MAC) remained unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play with a 3-0 victory against Northern Illinois University (1-10-1, 0-6-1 MAC) today (Oct. 5) at the KSU Soccer Field. The win was Kent States team-record winning streak to 10 games and it was the seventh shutout victory for the Flashes this season.
KSU has seven conference victories for the first time in the programs history and it tied the 1999 squad for the second-most season wins in school history with 10. After opening the season with a tie and loss at the Arizona Classic, the Golden Flashes have won the next 10 games by a combined 22-4.
The Golden Flashes got on the board in the 31st minute when sophomore Amanda Messer (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) tallied her third goal of the season and second in as many games. Messer's goal was setup when senior back Jackie Pecjak (Euclid, Ohio/Villa Angela-St. Joseph) took a shot from outside the box that was blocked by a Huskie defender. The rebound went straight to Messer, who drove a shot inside the right post from the top of the box, giving KSU a 1-0 lead at the half.
The Golden Flashes tallied a pair of goals just two minutes apart, beginning in the 75th minute, to put the game away. Senior midfielder Stacey Rust (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) headed a clearing attempt to the right wing. Sophomore midfielder Jenn Frey (Cincinnati, Ohio/Mother of Mercy) drove the ball up the wing and sent a cross back into the box where senior forward Lauren Caminati (Solon, Ohio/Solon) drove a shot into the upper third for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Kent State closed out the scoring in the 77th minute when senior midfielder Uma Ramadorai (Tucson, Ariz./Canyon Del Oro) sent a long ball from midfield to Frey cutting up the right wing. Frey took two dribbles before firing a shot from the box inside the left post. It was her second goal of the season.
Freshman keeper Alicia Fernandez (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) made three saves to earn her third shutout of the season. She improved her record to 5-1-1 on the year.
The Golden Flashes outshot Northern Illinois 32-9 in the contest.
Kent State is next in action when it hosts Miami University in a MAC showdown, Friday, Oct. 10, at the KSU Soccer Field. Game time is 4 p.m.
