Wrestling Shows its Wares at Intrasquad Meet

KENT, Ohio -- The Gold team defeated the Blue team 19-13 as the Kent State University wrestling team opened its 2003-04 home schedule with the Kent State Intrasquad Friday (Nov. 14) at Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.
The Gold trailed 10-4 after the first four matches but won the next five to hold an insurmountable 19-10 lead going into the final bout. Dave Garner (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit), Aaron Miller (Uniopolis, Ohio/Wapokoneta), Alex Camargo (Brook Park, Ohio/Berea) and Dino Razzano (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis DeSales) posted consecutive decisions for a 16-10 advantage, and true freshman A.J. Aeschlimann (Massillon, Ohio/Tuslaw) put the match out of reach with an upset of junior-college All-American Nick Hiller (Greenville, Ohio/Ellsworth [Iowa] C.C.) at 197 pounds.
In the final match at heavyweight, redshirt freshman Willie Leonard (Chestertown, Md./Kent County) decisioned freshman Mike Skonieczny (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) 2-0 with a takedown with two seconds left in overtime.
The Blue built its early six-point lead on the strength of wins by Drew Opfer (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Marys Central Catholic) and Kurt Gross (North Royalton, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) and a major decision by senior co-captain Mike Tolar (Parma, Ohio/St. Edward). In the second match, senior co-captain and three-time NCAA qualifier Jared Opfer (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Marys Central Catholic) of the Gold team posted a 13-3 major decision over redshirt freshman Justin Williams (Canton, Ohio/Jackson). Opfer had four takedowns in the third period.
The Golden Flashes next will compete at the Navy Classic Nov. 22.
