Kent State University sophomore outside hitter Danielle Holt (Galion, Ohio/Galion) was named the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week ending Nov. 24. This is the first time she has received this honor as well as the first time this season that a Kent State student-athlete was selected.
Holt, a business major with a 3.21 grade-point average, produced 45 kills against Western Michigan University in the first-round MAC tournament match Nov. 18, which set a school, conference and tournament record. That kills mark currently leads the nation with the highest number of kills in a match and is tied for 13th all-time in NCAA history for kills in a five-game match.
Holt led the MAC in aces per game (0.61), which also ranked 15th nationally, and ranked second in kills (4.93) and points (5.54) per game during the 2003 season. Her 527 kills this year are a school record and ties for the 13th most in league history. She also became the 10th Kent State player to eclipse 1,000 career kills with 1,022. For her efforts, she was named to the All-MAC First Team.
The Kent State volleyball team, under the direction of head coach Mora Kanim, finished 12-14 overall with an 8-8 league mark. The Golden Flashes tied for third in the MAC East Division.
The MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week honor is presented to a MAC male and female student-athlete who has a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better and performs well during that weeks competition. The winners are selected by one of the conferences faculty athletic representatives.
