KENT, Ohio β Kent State volleyball recognized its senior class Saturday evening following a 3-1 (24-26, 19-25, 25-23, 20-25), setback to Northern Illinois inside of the M.A.C. Center.
All three seniors were in the starting lineup for the season finale. Outside hitter Mackenzie McGuire recorded 11 kills in her 109th match as a Golden Flash. The only four-year member of the team, McGuire concludes her standout career sixth on the all-time kills list with 1,280. Defensive specialist Greta Bolognini tallied eight digs and right side Paige McGee had a season-best five kills.
Kent State (8-21, 3-15 MAC) was in position to win the opening set for the second night in a row, reaching 24 first on a kill by McGee, but the Huskies won the next three points for a 25-24 victory.
After losing the second set, the Flashes found a way to score in the crucial moments of the third to extend the match. McGuire put Kent State ahead 23-21 with a kill before NIU tied it by winning the next two points. A timeout iced the server, who sent the ball straight into the net. Sophomore Nadia Miller then provided the winner with a kill in the middle.
NIU then regrouped and posted a .350 hitting percentage to take the fourth set, 25-20.
Miller finished with a team-high 12 kills while hitting for a .500 clip. Junior Christina Vigil led the way with 31 assists and 10 digs for her 13th double-double of the season.
