Already recipients of the Mid-American Conference (MAC) regular-season title, the Kent State University field hockey team (10-9, 8-2 MAC), won more accolades today (Nov. 7) as the MAC announced the winners of its conference awards. Five Golden Flashes were selected to the 2003 All-MAC Team (two first-team and three second-team) and head coach Kerry de Vries brought home the Coach-of-the-Year title.
Senior Jennifer Melnyk (Delta, B.C./South Delta) and freshman Berber Rischen (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) were selected to the first team. Melnyk ranks first on the team and third in the conference with 13 goals this season. Rischen leads the team in points with 31 and assists with 11, good for second and first in the MAC, respectively.
A trio of seniors, Jessica Creeden (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus), Kelly Given (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Becky Rahaim (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) all were selected for the second team. This is the second second-team award for each one of the three.
de Vries brought home her third MAC Coach-of-the-Year trophy tonight. She lead her team to a 10-9 record, including a stellar 8-2 mark in the conference season. Additionally, the Golden Flashes brought home their third MAC regular-season title in the last five years.
de Vries, Melnyk, Rischen, Creeden, Given, Rahaim and the rest of the Golden Flashes are back in action in the semifinal round of the MAC tournament at Dix Stadium, in Kent, Ohio, Saturday, Nov. 8, at noon.
