Field Hockey Downed in Exhibition Opener, 2-1

The Kent State University field hockey team lost 2-1 to Northwestern University today (Aug. 23) at Dix Stadium in a scrimmage to prepare the Flashes for their season opener against Michigan State University on Aug. 30.
The Wildcats took an early lead on Megan Smalls deflection of Christine Nannicellis pass at the 3:59 mark of the first half.
Kent State answered on an unassisted goal by junior Lauren Grandinetti (West Long Branch, N.J./Shore Regional), her only shot of the game, just over eight minutes into the second half.
Northwestern had the game-winning strike seven minutes later, as Holly Palin scored on a pass from Diane Provencher.
In a closely contested battle, the Flashes took the lead in both shot attempts (9-8) and penalty corners (6-4), but were tagged with the loss.
Senior Jessica Creeden (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) had two saves on four attempts and Northwestern goalkeeper Sherri-Anne Nyberg had three saves on four attempts.
The two teams will meet up again at Northwestern Sept. 21.
The season opener against Michigan State on Aug. 30 is at 1 p.m. at Dix Stadium.
