ATHENS, Ohio -- On the first day of MAC play today (Sept. 26), the Golden Flashes (3-5) got their largest scoring output combined with their second shutout of the season to get a 4-0 victory over the Ohio University Bobcats (2-5). The victory gives head coach Kerry de Vries 100 in her career.
Kent State benifitted from two goals by freshman Berber Rischen (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) sandwiching senior Jennifer Melnyks (Delta, B.C./South Delta) two-goal effort.
Rischen broke the scoreless tie at the 5:40 mark in the first half with an unassisted shot from the right side. Melnyk had back-to-back goals in the second half to give the Flashes the three-goal lead. Rischen then finished the scoring with a penalty shot goal with 5:33 left in the game.
Senior Jessica Creeden (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) stopped 12 shots to earn her second shutout of the season and sophomore Jen Cote made four stops in eight attempts to take the victory.
The winningest coach in KSU history, de Vries is now 100-43-0 for a .699 winning percentage, the best mark in the school record books.
The Golden Flashes are back in action at No. 5 University of Michigan on Monday, Sept. 29, at 3 p.m.
