Box Score
KENT, Ohio The Kent State University soccer team rallied from a 2-1 deficit with two goals in a six-minute span late in the second half to claim a 3-2 victory against IPFW at the KSU Soccer Field today (Oct. 1). Junior Amanda Messer (Cincinnati, Ohio/McNicholas) scored with 15 minutes to play to tie the game, then senior Nikki Lichtenfeld (Cincinnati, Ohio/McAuley) tallied the game-winning goal on a header with just under 10 minutes remaining to lift Kent State.
The win snapped a two-game winless streak for Kent State, and improved the Flashes to 4-0-2 in non-conference games this season. Kent State improved to 6-2-3, while IPFW fell to 3-6.
Kent State opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first half when freshman Lisa Kurz (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) corralled a loose ball just outside the left corner of the box. After making a move, she laced a shot into the upper right corner for her third goal of the season, 29 minutes into the contest.
IPFW leveled the score 11 minutes into the second half when Kristy Arnett sent a high-arcing ball into the box from the right wing that was headed in by Anika Apar. The Mastodons took a 2-1 lead with 20 minutes to play on an own goal when an IPFW throw in was headed into the KSU goal by sophomore Heather Gilbert (Akron, Ohio/Ellet), who was attempting to clear the ball.
But Kent State rallied just five minutes later when junior Raetta Hord (Mason, Ohio/William Mason) chipped the ball ahead and Messer one-touched the pass under the IPFW keeper, tying the game at 2-2. The goal was Messers second of the year. Lichtenfeld then sealed the win with a diving header past the left post, redirecting Kurzs free kick from the right wing, for Lichtenfelds third goal of the season.
Kent State outshot IPFW 22-9 in the contest, including 11-3 in the second half. Sophomore keeper Alicia Fernandez (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) made three saves to earn the victory.
The Golden Flashes return to Mid-American Conference play Sunday, Oct. 3, when they host Buffalo at 1 p.m. at the KSU Soccer Field.
NOTES: Kent State earned its second come-from-behind victory of the season, the second in the last four games... The meeting was the first-ever between the teams.
