Soccer Edges Western Michigan 3-2 in OT

KALAMAZOO, Mich. The Kent State University soccer team moved its unbeaten streak to five straight games with a 3-2, overtime victory at Western Michigan today (Oct. 10). The Golden Flashes lost a 2-0 halftime lead, but freshman Amy Kessler scored 1:02 into the second overtime session to lift KSU (8-2-4, 4-2-2 MAC) to the win.
Kent State is 3-0-2 in its last five games and are undefeated when Kessler scores.
The Golden Flashes got on the board first when freshman Lisa Kurz scored fourth goal of the season just 12 minutes into the contest. Freshman Brittany Fracasso assisted on the goal. Sixteen minutes later, Kent State moved out to a 2-0 lead as junior Jen Frey scored off an assist from freshman Kimberly Dimitroff.
Kent State took that 2-0 lead into halftime and the score stayed that way until the games 64th minute, when Mandi Marsh cut the lead in half at 2-1. Then, with just 1:09 remaining in the game, Katie Ruzinsky tied the game at 2-2 after Kent State had a player sent off for a hard challenge, leaving each team with 10 players. WMU had its goalkeeper sent off earlier in the game.
In the overtime, the teams played a scoreless first 10 minutes before switching ends and starting the second overtime period. Just over a minute later, Kessler tallied her third goal of the season, the game-winner, assisted by senior Nikki Lichtenfeld and Dimitroff.
Western Michigan outshot Kent State 15-13, with sophomore keeper Alicia Fernandez making two saves to earn the victory for the Flashes.
Kent State is next in action when it plays Bowling Green, Friday, Oct. 15, at 4 p.m. at the KSU Soccer Field.
NOTES: The Kent State victory was the second-straight 3-2, overtime win against Western Michigan... The Golden Flashes and Broncos have played five overtime games in seven all-time meetings against each other... The Flashes evened the all-time series with Western Michigan 3-3-1.
