KENT, Ohio The Kent State University soccer team pushed its unbeaten streak to a season-high six games with a 4-2 victory against Bowling Green today (Oct. 15). The Golden Flashes never trailed in the game, as they matched a season-best with four goals in the contest.
The game featured the top two scorers in the Mid-American Conference in Kent State freshman forward Kimberly Dimitroff and Bowling Greens Kristy Coppes. Dimitroff scored a pair of goals to tie Coppes for the MAC lead as Kent State improved to 9-2-4 (5-2-2 MAC), while Bowling Green dropped to 4-10-1 (2-5-1 MAC).
Kent State got on the scoreboard first in the 41st minute when freshman Lisa Kurz connected on a free kick with a shot into the left corner that glanced off Ali Shinglers fingertips and into the net. The goal was Kurzs fifth of the season.
Bowling Green knotted the score at 1-1 when Coppes made a move in the box and slid the ball into an empty net. But the tie was short-lived as Kent State took a 2-1 lead just five minutes later, when Dimitroff took a feed from freshman Amy Kessler on a break and played a left-footed shot into the side netting for her 11th of the year.
Junior Amanda Messer made it 3-1 in the 75th minute, collecting a loose ball in the box after a scramble and chipping over the keeper for her third tally of the season. Nine minutes later, however, Bowling Green got within one a 3-2, when Britt Anderson knocked home a rebound of a Coppes shot.
But Dimitroff would ice the game in the 87th minute, when junior Wendy Gambles throw-in was misplayed, leading directly to a Dimitroff breakaway. She netted her 12th goal of the season with a shot from just inside the top of the box.
Kent State is next in action when it plays Toledo, Sunday, Oct. 17, at 1 p.m. at the KSU Soccer Field.
NOTES: Sophomore Alicia Fernandez made 10 saves to earn the win in goal... Kent State is 4-0-2 in the six-game unbeaten streak, dating to a 3-1 loss at Miami, Sept. 24.
