KENT, Ohio The Kent State University soccer team moved into sole possession of third place in the Mid-American Conference standings with a 1-1 tie against the University of Toledo at the KSU Soccer Field today (Oct. 17). The tie kept Kent States unbeaten streak intact, extending it to a season-best seven games.
Playing on a windy day, the teams were evenly matched, with both goals in the game and the better of the scoring chances, coming at the East end of the field. Kent State played with the wind at its back in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead 41 seconds before halftime when freshman Kimberly Dimitroff scored her 13th goal of the season.
Junior Ashley Bohinc lofted a pass from the left side of the field to the right side, where Dimitroff collected the pass and made a move. After dribble up field, Dimitroff laced a shot into the upper left corner. She came into the contest as the MAC leader in goals, tied with Bowling Greens Kristy Coppes.
Toledo then needed only 12 minutes in the second half to tie the game after a corner kick. The ball was served into the area to the far post, where Pam Richard headed the ball back across the goal to Kelly Langenbeck, who headed it home for her fifth of the year.
In overtime, neither team mustered much offense as Kent State outshot Toledo 3-2 in the extra time, evening the game total as each team registered 17 shots in the contest. Sophomore Alicia Fernandez made three saves to earn the draw, while Jen Whipple made 10 saves for Toledo.
Kent State is next in action when it plays MAC-leading Ohio, Friday, Oct. 23, at 3 p.m. at the KSU Soccer Field.
NOTES: Kent State is 4-0-3 in the last seven games... The Golden Flashes are just 1-1-3 in games this season when they score only one goal.
