KENT, Ohio For the second consecutive year, an outstanding Kent State University soccer season came to a bittersweet end in the Mid-American Conference Tournament quarterfinal round after the Golden Flashes fell 2-1 in overtime to Bowling Green State University at the KSU Soccer Field this afternoon (Nov. 2) in a driving rainstorm. Britt Andersons header with 1:08 remaining in the second overtime provided the difference.
The Falcons, the No. 8 seed coming into the tournament, avenged a 4-2 defeat to Kent State earlier in the season, while the No. 1-seeded Golden Flashes fell in the quarterfinals for the second year in a row after losing last season 1-0 to Ohio as the second seed.
"Its a magnificent win, but to win a game against a side like Kent State...its an unbelievable achievement to come in here and beat them on their own field," Bowling Green coach Andy Richards said. "We have a lot of respect for Kent State and they have a lot of dangerous players. For us to get a win against a team like that is huge and were very excited right now."
The Falcons got on the board first, when Kristy Coppes scored in the 33rd minute after a ball was served back across the box to Coppes foot. She one-touched the ball into the right corner for her 15th goal of the year.
Kent State answered just five minutes later when Kimberly Dimitroff corralled a pass at the left corner of the box. Her shot sailed along the ground inside the right post for her 16th goal of the season.
The game-winning goal came with 68 seconds remaining in the second overtime period off a restart to the right of the box. The ball was served to the far post, where Julie Trundle headed the ball back across the goal and Anderson headed it past the right post.
"We talked about how little things were going to make a difference," Richards said. "We served the ball into the correct area, she put the ball back across the goal and thats exactly what we preach in practice."
"It was a hard-fought game that went back-and-forth and could have gone either way," Kent State coach Rob Marinaro said. "On a day like to today, with the rain, you have to keep fighting for that one opportunity and unfortunately they got it. They took advantage with a good goal to won it that was very well defended."
The Golden Flashes held the advantage in shots in the contest, 21-8, and 5-1 in the overtime, but Falcon keeper Ali Shingler made 10 saves to keep KSU off the scoreboard. Kent State keeper Alicia Fernandez made five saves for the Flashes.
With the win, Bowling Green advances to face Western Michigan in the semifinals, which will be played at Ohio this weekend.
NOTES: Kent State established a school record for fewest losses in a season with four, bettering last years mark of five... The Golden Flashes fell to 1-4 all-time in four MAC Tournament appearances... The back-to-back losses to close the season were the lone consecutive losses all season for Kent State.
