The Golden Flashes opened the scoring in the top of the third, with a trio of freshmen setting the table. Designated hitter Marshall Woods (Appomatox, Va./Appomatox County) and second baseman Andrew Davis hit consecutive singles (the first hits of their respective careers) and shortstop Emmanuel Burriss (Washington, D.C./Wilson) reached base on an error giving KSU loaded bases with no outs.
Senior Matt Sega (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield), sophomore Joe Tucker (Canton, Ohio/Central Catholic) and senior Adam Crowder (Mantua, Ohio/Eastern Kentucky) followed with consecutive RBI singles to give the Flashes an early 3-0 lead.
The Lobos retaliated with an RBI single of their own in the bottom half, as senior Sean Murray drove in junior Matt Young.
Kent State then broke the game open in the fifth, crossing the plate eight times, highlighted by a bases-clearing double by sophomore Kurt Eichorn (Galion, Ohio/Lexington), recording the first three runs of the inning.
Sophomore Andy Sonnanstine (1-0)(Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth) had his second solid start of the year, spreading four hits over six innings, striking out six and allowing just one earned run to get the win. Junior Cooper Eddy (0-1) took the loss for New Mexico.
Woods added a two-run home run in the sixth, the first of his career. He ended the game at 4-for-6 with two runs scored and two RBI.
No. 24 University of Nebraska (1-0) dropped Northwestern University (1-3) in the opening game, 19-3.
Woods, Davis, Burriss, Sega, Tucker, Crowder, Eichorn, Sonnanstine and the rest of the Golden Flashes are back in action tomorrow against Northwestern at 12:30 p.m. (ET).
