The Huskers wasted little time getting things started, scoring eight runs in the first two innings.
The Golden Flashes rallied in the second, as senior rightfielder Adam Crowder (Mantua, Ohio/Eastern Kentucky) singled and later scored on a passed ball. Freshman designated hitter Woods followed three batters later with a two run home run, his second long ball of the tournament, cutting the lead to 8-3.
Nebraska busted it back open with four more runs in the fourth, all with two outs. Junior Daniel Bruces two-run double highlighted the inning.
"This being the first time that Jason (Brunke) has thrown against a team in over a year, I think he struggled and it put us behind," KSU head coach Rick Rembielak said. "He had trouble locating pitches and could only get one pitch over regularly for strikes.
"It's crucial to our success that we figure out which of our young kids will be available for us when we get to the conference season. We need to get them in there against national-caliber teams like Nebraska to find out."
Senior first baseman Kinyon (Lima, Ohio/Bath) got four runs back with one swing, lifting a breaking ball just inside the left-field foul pole for a grand slam in the sixth. Kinyon ended the day 2-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.
Nebraska added nine runs over the final three innings, including three home runs to finish off the Flashes.
Crowder drove in Joe Tucker (Canton, Ohio/Central Catholic) in the ninth on a double, later scoring on a double play.
Junior righthander Jason Brunke (0-1) (Carroll Stream, Ill./DuPage J.C.) pitched two innings, giving up eight runsseven earnedto take the loss in his first Division-I start. Richardson (1-0) picked up the win for the Huskers, pitching five innings, giving up seven earned runs and striking out two.
Kinyon, Woods, Crowder, Tucker, Brunke and the rest of the Golden Flashes are back in action Friday, Feb. 27 at 3:30 p.m. against Coastal Carolina University (4-2), in the Baseball at the Beach Tournament at Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
