The Monarchs put seven unanswered runs on the board over the first six innings. Third baseman Allen Strick doubled home two in the second, bringing home a third with another double in the sixth. Strick finished the game at 2-for-2 with one run scored and three RBI.
Their starter (Donnie Smith) more or less shut us down, KSU head coach Rick Rembielak said. We got behind on some missed plays and couldnt recover. I have to give our guys credit for scoring seven late runs. This team is showing signs that it won't quit."
Senior Chad Kinyon (Lima, Ohio/Bath) ruined ODU starter Donnie Smiths shutout bid in the seventh with a two-run blast over the centerfield fence, the fourth of the season and 33rd of his career, good for sole possession of fifth in KSU history.
ODU posted their final two runs in the seventh, both scoring on a Steven Harris double.
In the eighth, after a Ben Whitney (Akron, Ohio/St. Vincent-St. Mary) double, a single by Matt Sega (Canfield, Ohio/Canfield) and a Marshall Woods (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox County) walk loaded the bases, rightfielder Eric Holick (Westlake, Ohio/Westlake) doubled to left center, clearing the bases. Holick then scored on Andrew Daviss (Chillecothe, Ohio/Zane Trace) double, with Davis scoring later on a wild pitch to bring the score to 9-7. After a walk to Kinyon, KSU had the tying run at the plate when Monarch reliever Dana Arrowood entered the ballgame and proceeded to douse the Flashes chances, retiring them in order for the remainder of the contest.
KSU starter Jason Brunke (1-2) (Carroll Stream, Ill./DuPage J.C.) went five innings in the loss, allowing four earned runs and striking out five. Smith (2-0) threw seven strong innings to earn the victory, allowing just two late runs and fanning ten. Arrowood earned his first save of the season.
Rembielak, Kinyon, Whitney, Woods, Holick, Davis, Brunke and the rest of the Golden Flashes will be back in action Friday, March 19 at 3 p.m. at UNC-Wilmington.
