We played some great ball today, KSU head coach Rick Rembielak said. We pitched well, especially Laraway, who was key because we have four games in the next two days. We also played errorless ball in the second game and well put up a lot of Ws that way.
Kinyon started the scoring with a solo blast into the right-center-field stands. The home run gives Kinyon sole possession of sixth place in school history with 31 career bombs.
Kinyon added another RBI in the fourth, driving home sophomore Joe Tucker (Canton, Ohio/Central Catholic) with a double. Catcher Kurt Eichorn (Galion, Ohio/Lexington) followed with a double of his own to plate Kinyon and rightfielder Adam Crowder (Mantua, Ohio/Eastern Kentucky) singled to bring home Eichorn.
Tucker scored his second run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Kinyon in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-0. Kinyon, a senior team captain, finished the day at 2-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI and a home run.
The Cardinals scored two in the bottom of the fifth on a double by Luis Pardo and a single by Danny Plasencia.
KSU answered with its final run in the sixth, on a solo home run by Woods.
Preseason all-conference selection Mark Jurich hit a solo shot of his own for UL in the eighth, but the Flashes held on for the 6-3 victory.
Laraway (1-2) lasted 6-1/3 innings, giving up two earned runs and fanning eight, to get his first victory of the season. Sophomore Chad Wagler (Hartville, Ohio/Uniontown Lake) threw 2-2/3 innings to get his first save. Cardinal starter Mike Lynn (1-1) lasted just three innings, allowing four runs scored on five hits in the loss.
Kinyon, Woods, Laraway, Rembielak, Tucker, Eichorn, Crowder, Wagler and the rest of the Golden Flashes are back in action tomorrow with a double-header against Lousiville at noon.
