The Golden Flashes got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when freshman rightfielder Abby Molnar (Loveland, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) singled to center field and then stole second base before advancing to third on a wild pitch, before being brought home by a two out infield single off the bat of senior centerfielder Kelly Maehl (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy).
Up 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Golden Flashes offense finally figured out Akrons Tina McCauley as junior third basemen Jodi Stevens (McCutchenville, Ohio/Mohawk) and Logar belted back-to-back home runs to give the Golden Flashes an insurmountable 3-0 lead. Stevens home run was her third in as many games and fourth on the year.
After managing only one hit off of Logar in the first four innings, the Zips loaded the bases with one out in the top of the fifth inning. Pinch hitter Amy Garner then hit a line drive right back at Logar, who managed to make an incredible off-balance catch to keep the runners at bay. Logar then got out of the jam by getting centerfielder Becky Stern to groundout to senior shortstop Marci Ridenbaugh (Canton, Ohio/South).
The Golden Flashes tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom half of the fifth to jump out to their biggest lead of the day, 6-0. Akron finally got on the board in the top of the sixth inning when Kelly Quigley hit a two-run homer to make the score 6-2. The two runs were the first for the Zips in the last 26 and a third innings against KSU pitching this season.
In the top of the seventh, with runners on first and third and no outs, Akron saw a late rally sputter as Ashley VanDine lined out to sophomore second basemen Ashley Ball (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon), who then doubled up pinch runner Rachel Kraus. Freshman relief pitcher Brittney Robinson (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone) then got Stern to strike out swinging to end the game.
Stevens went 2-3 with one home run and two r.b.i. and Logar pitched five shotout innings scattering four hit and connected for her first career home run to lead the Golden Flashes.
The Golden Flashes will return to action when they host a doublehader against Bowling Green State University Wednesday April 21 at the Kent State Softball Field. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
