KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Kent State University baseball team opened its three-game series with a 5-4 victory against Western Michigan University here today.s The Golden Flashes (28-22, 11-8sMAC)sused three runs in the fifth inning to take a 5-3, then held on as the Broncos threatened in the ninth, stranding the game-tying run at second base.
Both teams got on the board in the second inning, as each plated a pair of runs in the frame.s Senior Matt Sega led off the inning for KSU with an infield single, the sophomore Kurt Eichorn was hit by a pitch.s Sega scored on a fielder's choice before junior Eric Holick plated Eichorn with a single back through the box, giving the Flashes a 2-0 advantage before WMU tied the score in the bottom half of the inning.
The Broncos grabbed a 3-2 lead in the fourth when Mark Abro scored on a double by Andy Roy.s But KSU answered back in the top of the fifth, as senior Chad Kinyon ripped a one-out double to left field, scoring on Sega's single to left.s Eichorn then singled and senior Adam Crowder reached on fielder's choice before junior Chuck Moore came through with a two-out double to left that plated two runs.
The score would remain 5-3 until the eight when reliever Chad Wagler issued a one-out walk to Tony Scheffler, who scored on a Frank Ballard double.s But Wagler word out of the inning, getting a pinch hitter to ground out to end WMU's scoring threat.s The Broncos again threatened in the ninth as Justin Carter doubled with two outs, but Wagler got Abro to ground out to shortstop to end the contest.
Andy Sonnanstine went seven innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing three runs, while striking out four, to improve to 8-4 on the year.s Wagler went two innings to earn his fourth save.s Sega and Kinyon each collected three hits in the game, while Moore drove in three runs.
The teams are back in action, tomorrow, Sunday, May 16, for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
