KENT, Ohio The Kent State University soccer team rebounded from its first loss of the season Friday with a come-from-behind 2-1 victory against Eastern Michigan in overtime today (Sept. 19) at the KSU Soccer Field. Freshman Kimbely Dimitroff scored each of the KSU goals, including the game-winner with 2:08 remaining in the first overtime period.
With the win, Kent State improved to 5-1-2 (2-1 MAC), while Eastern Michigan fell to 4-2-2 (1-1-1 MAC). The Golden Flashes also avoided being swept in a MAC weekend for the first time since Sept. 13-15, 2002.
Eastern Michigan got on the board first 25 minutes into the game when Jessica Hupe knocked in the rebound of her own shot after a run down the left sideline. The score would remain 1-0 into the half, with the Flashes outshooting EMU 13-9 in the opening period.
Kent State knotted the score at 1-1 in the 75th minute when junior Jen Frey feathered a pass to Dimitroff at the left side of the box. Dimitroff took one dribble and ripped a shot into the right corner for her fifth goal of the season. From there, the teams would share chances, with Kent State taking 11 shots in the second half, compared to three for the Eagles. Both teams would have tremendous scoring chances in the final two minutes.
Eastern Michigans Sophia Naum ripped a shot that was punched over the bar by KSU keeper Alicia Fernandez with 1:46 to play and KSU answered with a chance of its own as Dimitroff raced down the right side and her shot sailed just wide 54 seconds left.
In overtime, Eastern Michigan outshot Kent State 4-3, but the Flashes delivered the one that mattered most. Frey sent a ball ahead that Dimitroff ran onto. Battling two EMU defenders, Dimitroff raced past one then slipped the ball to the right of the other, while dancing around to the left reclaim the ball. After one touch, Dimitroff slid the ball past the keeper for the game-winning goal with 2:08 to play in the first overtime period. It was her sixth tally of the season and second game-winning goal.
Kent State outshot Eastern Michigan 27-16 in the contest, with Eagle keeper Nikki Allen making 15 saves. Fernandez made five saves for Kent State.
The Golden Flashes are next in action when they play at Miami, Friday, Sept. 24 at 5 p.m.
NOTES: The overtime victory is the first for Kent State in three OT games this year... KSUs last overtime win also was a comeback victory, a 3-2 win against Western Michigan 10/3/03, when the Flashes rallied from a 2-0 deficit to win.
