Alums and Friends Hit the Links at 2004 Baseball Golf Outing

KENT, Ohio -- Nearly 100 alumni and friends of the Kent State University baseball program participated in the annual Golden Flashes Golf Outing on Saturday, September 25, at Windmill Lakes Golf Club in Ravenna.
"I dont think the event could have turned out better," said head baseball coach Scott Stricklin. "The outing had great support from our alumni and everyone had a great time."
Approximately twenty-three foursomes were made up of former Golden Flash players, friends of the program, and special guests.
Former major league player and manager Mike Hargrove, now a special advisor for the Cleveland Indians, and Rich Rollins (1958-60), a former Golden Flash and American League Rookie of the Year and All-Star, were among the 91 golfers in the scramble.
The event, which served as the kickoff to the programs "Full Count" seating campaign to raise funds in support of the new Schoonover stadium currently under construction, included golf, lunch, dinner, and a silent auction.
"This event is all about getting together with former teammates and old friends," added Stricklin, himself a former All-Mid-American Conference catcher at Kent State. "Just as importantly, it allows you to have a good time while supporting your alma mater."
The attendance total marked the highest turnout in the events eight-year history.
The winning foursome (-13) was comprised of Mike Bishop (1985-88), a 2005 Varsity K Hall of Fame inductee, Nick Venutto (1986-88), James Bonnici, and Jon Massarelli.
Sports memorabilia available during the auction included autographed baseballs and bats from current Indian Players like Omar Vizquel, Travis Hafner, and Victor Martinez, items from other big leaguers like Jason Varitek of the Boston Red Sox and Mark Teixeira of the Texas Rangers, a signed helmet from Courtney Brown of the Cleveland Browns, as well as a set of tickets to the October 17 Browns vs. Cincinnati Bengals game in Cleveland.
