Gymnastics Opens MAC Slate with Strong Win over Ball State

Recording season-bests on all five events, the Kent State University gymnastics team (2-1, 1-0 MAC) dominated Ball State University (0-5, 0-2 MAC) 194.775-190.225 in front of a large crowd Friday night (Jan. 28) in Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center.

Kent State got off to a blazing start in the first rotation and never looked back as the Flashes notched a 48.300 on vault. Junior Carrie Mayle (Fremont, Ohio/St. Josephs) led the way with a 9.750, placing third in the event.

The Flashes maintained steam through the second rotation, sweeping the top six spots on bars. Senior Erika Linnersten (Cincinnati, Ohio/Finneytown) won the event with a 9.875. Freshman Kristin Peters (Maineville, Ohio/Kings) claimed second place while sophomore Shawntelle Thompson (New Albany, Ind/New Albany) tallied a personal-best 9.750 for third place.

KSUs success continued on beam where Linnersten won her second event of the night, with a 9.875. Freshman Amy Presan (Scottsdale, Ariz./Horizon) finished second with 9.850.

On floor, Kent State swept the top three places as sophomore Amy Cucinotta (Williamsville, N.Y./Amherst) posted a career-best 9.900 for first place. Mayle and freshman Phylicia Robertson (Lincoln, Neb./Lincoln) tied for second with a score of 9.850.

Mayle edged Ball States Kelli Davis and Jenna Tarkington for the all-around title with a composite score of 38.825.

Kent State, under the direction of head coach Brice Biggin, is next in action Friday, Feb. 4, as Flashes head across Northern Ohio to face Bowling Green State University at 7 p.m. in Anderson Arena.
