Field Hockey Weekend Features Visits From Miami and Ball State

The push for postseason seeding takes center stage this weekend when the Kent State field hockey team hosts a pair of Mid-American Conference contests. The Golden Flashes (2-12, 2-2 MAC) open the weekend at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 14, by hosting Miami (6-7, 3-2 MAC), a team they lost to earlier this season and trail in the standings by just a game in the win column. Kent State then welcomes Ball State (2-9, 1-3 MAC) to town on Saturday, Oct. 15, for a 1 p.m. tilt.
Recapping Last Weekend
The Golden Flashes got in the win column last weekend, earning their first two victories of the season, both in league play. A three-goal second half propeled the Flashes to a 5-3 win over Central Michigan on Friday, their first victory at the new KSU Field Hockey Stadium. Then on Sunday, freshman Britt van Pelts hat-trick accounted for all the KSU scoring in a 3-2 overtime victory at league-leading Ohio.In the two games, van Pelt totaled five goals and added an assist. She then scored again on Tuesday in the Flashes 4-2 loss at No. 9 Ohio State.
FLASHES SWEEP WEEKLY AWARDS
The Golden Flashes took both weekly MAC awards following their 2-0 weekend in league play. Freshman Britt van Pelt was named the Offensive Player of the Week after scoring five goals in the two games. Junior goalkeeper Linz Markwart took home Defensive Player of the Week honors for posting 14 saves in the two games, including 11 in the overtime at Ohio.About Kent State
The Flashes stumbled out of the gates with an 0-11 start against one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country, but have won two in a row and are right in the thick of the MAC race. Individually, freshman Britt Van Pelts scoring spree (six goals in three games) has vaulted her into the team lead in scoring with six goals and 15 points. Classmate Melanie Bierens de Haan is second with five goals and 13 points. Junior Berber Rischen leads the team with six assists while Elizabeth Lahey has chipped in with five goals and 11 points.In goal, junior Linz Markwart has made 68 saves and has a .672 saves percentage in 11 games (10 starts). Sophomore Kara Copeland has made 26 stops and has a .650 saves percentage in five appearances (3 starts).
Scouting MIAMI
The RedHawks have split their last four games, the first three of which went into overtime. Miami dropped a 1-0 overtime decision at Ball State last Friday before rebounding for a 2-0 win over Missouri State at home on Sunday. The RedHawks are led offensively by Taylor Florence with five goals and 12 points. Kerri Orr has the second most saves in the league with 95 and has a .772 saves percentage in goal.The ksu-MIAMI Series
Miamis 4-0 win on Sept. 23 snapped a 19-game Kent State winning streak in the series. The Golden Flashes still lead the series 32-22-1 and won three, one-goal games against Miami last year.Scouting BALL STATE
The Cardinals have dropped six-of-seven games heading into the weekend. However, their one win during that stretch was a 1-0 overtime thriller against Miami. Chantelle Isaac leads the MAC with eight goals in just nine games and her 16 points lead the squad, Tracy Bannister, coming off her fifth career shutout in the win over Miami, has made 51 saves to date.The ksu-BSU Series
Ball State holds a 30-18 edge over Kent State heading into Sundays 49th all-time meeting. However, Kent State has won 10 of the last 12 meetings in the series, including both games last year. The two teams will meet again in two weeks in Muncie, Ind.
