KENT, Ohio--The Kent State field hockey team won its fifth straight Mid-American Conference (MAC) game today (Oct. 22) with a 4-2 victory over league newcomer Missouri State at the Kent State Field Hockey Stadium.
Kent State (5-12, 5-2 MAC) took an early lead seven minutes in to the first half with the unassisted goal by freshman Melanie Bierens de Haan (Bilthoven, Holland), her seventh of the season. Junior Elizabeth Lahey (Laconia, N.H./Laconia) added when she finished on a pass from Bierens de Haan, placing the Golden Flashes ahead by two. The Kent State lead improved to 3-0 before the half with a goal by junior Liz Fettrow (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and assist from freshman Britt van Pelt (Ben Haag, Holland).
Missouri State narrowed the gap with two goals in the second half from junior Stephanie Wehrman that made the score 3-2 before Fettrow secured the win with her second goal of the game with two minutes remaining.
Our defense was sloppy at some points in the game, but overall we had a good performance, said head coach Kerry DeVries.
Missouri State sophomore goalkeeper Kim Kinsella had 11 saves for the day.
With the win, the Golden Flashes avenge an early-season loss to the Bears and rest second in the MAC standings.
Kent State hosts MAC front runner Ohio University one Sunday, Oct. 23 in a showdown for first place at 1 p.m. Kent State will also officially dedicate the new Field Hockey Stadium prior to the game.
