Softball Drops Two Close Ones at Bulldog Classic

The Kent State University softball team fell to 7-5 on the year after dropping a pair of close games at the Bulldog Classic March 4. The Flashes first fell 2-1 to Ole Miss before losing 3-2 to No. 24 Fresno State University in the nightcap.Sophomore pitcher/designated player Brittney Robinson (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone) put the Flashes on the board in the third inning. She started with a single up the middle before sophomore Ashley Balls (Lebanon, Ohio/Lebanon) single put her at second base. Robinson then scored after freshman Kim Hamilton (Cave Junction, Ore./Illinois Valley) reached first on a fielders choice.The Rebels took the 2-1 lead in the fifth, notching both runs off of a Jordan Chitwood double, plating teammates Lauren Rowe and Kayla Mosley.Robinson is now 2-4 in the circle, after pitching five innings with five Ks and two earned runs.In game two against host Fresno State, Hamilton scored in the first inning after a couple of Bulldogs miscues. After being hit by a pitch, she advanced to second on a single by senior Julie Kemesky (Youngstown, Ohio/Fitch). Hamilton then scored on an errant throw by the catcher in attempts to pick her off.Fresno State answered with a leadoff homer by Christina Clark in the bottom of the first, tying the score 1-1. The Bulldogs then went up 2-1 in the third after Leticia Pachecos single scored Jamie Southern.KSU started off the fifth with back-to-back hits from freshman Jessica Toocheck (Medina, Ohio/Medina) and Ball and ended with Toocheck scoring on a wild pitch to even the score 2-2.The Bulldogs went back up for good in the sixth on its second home run of the game, this time from Rachael Donaldson.The Flashes tallied six hits from the No. 24 Bulldogs, led by Toocheck, who went 2-for-3 with one run. Junior pitcher Erin Christopher (Loudonville, Ohio/Loudonville) notched her first loss of the season, falling to 2-1 on the year.Kent State wraps the Bulldog Classic with three games Saturday, March 5.
