Field Hockey's Home Opener Spoiled by No. 9 Michigan, 4-3

KENT, Ohio Playing its first game on its new field, the Kent State field hockey team jumped out to an early 2-0 lead only to see ninth-ranked Michigan come back for a 4-3 victory today (Sept. 25), sending the Golden Flashes to their ninth straight loss.
After opening the season on the road for the first eight games while construction was completed on the Kent State Field Hockey Complex, the Golden Flashes (0-9) came out firing in their home debut. Juniors Liz Fettrow (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Berber Rischen (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) connected for early goals- both on assists from freshman Britt van Pelt (Den Haag, Holland)- and led 2-0 just over 13 minutes into the game.
Michigan answered back with three straight goals. Erin Dallas put the Wolverines on the board with 13:21 left off a feed from Katie Morris. Morris then knocked in a rebound with 5:24 to go before halftime to knot the match at 2-2.With just under two minutes left in the half, Sarah Wilhite found Lucia Belassi for the goal to put the Wolverines up 3-2.
With just six seconds remaining in the first half, Rischen connected with classmate Elizabeth Lahey (Laconia, N.H./Laconia) to tie the game at 3-3.
The game remained tied until Michigans Kristen Tiner found the back of the cage with 11 minutes left for the eventual game-winner.
Sophomore Kara Copeland (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) made five saves in goal for the Flashes. Michigans Beth Riley turned away four shots.
The Golden Flashes will look for their first win of the season on Friday, Sept. 30 when they travel to new Mid-American Conference member Missouri State.
