KENT, Ohio The Kent State University women's soccer team snapped a two-game losing streak with a convincing 4-1 victory against Miami University today (Sept. 25), Kent State's first victory against the RedHawks since 1998. The Golden Flashes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 10 minutes on a pair of goals by junior Danie Irwin, en route to their first Mid-American Conference win of the season.
In the last six games against Miami, Kent State had an 0-5-1 record and today's victory by the Golden Flashes is the first since a 1-0 triumph, ironically, exactly seven years ago, Sept. 25, 1998.
The Golden Flashes (4-5-1, 1-1 MAC) day got off to a hot start as Irwin scored the opening goal of the game just over eight minutes in. Off a restart, sophomore Kimberly Dimitroff's initial flick on was stopped, then sophomore Amy Kessler had her rebound attempt knocked away at the goal line. But Irwin was there to collect the second rebound and knock it home for her first goal of the season.
Less than three minutes later, Irwin gave KSU a 2-0 advantage when she headed home a corner kick from senior Jen Frey inside the right post. The goals are the first of Irwin's career.
Senior Raetta Hord gave Kent State a 3-0 lead in the 17th minute when she collected a clearing attempt about 30 yards out on the right wing. Hord took a shot and the Miami keeper, who was off the line, backpedaled, jumped and brought the ball down. But her momentum carried her across the goal line for a goal. The tally was the first of Hord's career.
Miami (3-4, 1-1 MAC) narrowed the lead to 3-1 with a goal by Kristin Smith seven minutes before halftime. But the Golden Flashes pushed the lead back to three goals just five minutes into the second half. Redshirt freshman Catharine Marosszeky played a long ball up the middle of the field that Dimitroff collected. She pushed into the left side of the penalty area and drove a shot that glanced off a Miami defender and past the keeper inside the left post. It was the fourth goal of the season for Dimitroff.
Freshman Kristen Nelson picked up the win in goal for Kent State, making four saves. She improved to 2-2-1 on the year. The Golden Flashes outshot Miami 13-10 in the contest.
The Golden Flashes are next in action when they travel to Mount Pleasant, Mich., to face Central Michigan University, Friday, Sept. 30, at 4 p.m.
