KENT, Ohio For the third time this season, the Kent State University women's soccer team needed two extra periods to extend its school record home winning streak as junior forward Kimberly Dimitroff's game-winner in at 103:44 gave the Golden Flashes a 2-1 double-overtime victory over visiting Eastern Michigan University this afternoon (Oct. 1).
The win was the third straight overall for Kent State (6-5-1, 3-1 MAC) and the 10th straight at home dating back to last season.
Dimitroff, who assisted on KSU's first goal, ended what was a very physical and edgy contest by dribbling through and past three Eastern Michigan (4-5-2, 1-3 MAC) defenders before blasting a shot past Eagles' goalkeeper Monique Budani and into the far right corner of the net. It was the first goal of the season for the two-time All-MAC selection who was playing in her fourth game after sitting out the nonconference portion of the schedule while recovering from a knee injury.
After a scoreless first half, sophomore midfielder Caitlin Hester gave Kent State a 1-0 lead in the 56th minute with a controversial goal. Hester's boot from the far right side of the box appeared to be pinned by Budani against the post. However, the referee ruled that ball had crossed the line and was pinned inside the post before it was knocked out by Budani.
Eastern Michigan tied the score at 70:42 when Katie Zundel put in Maggie Christensen's corner kick.
Kent State outshot EMU 29-19 overall, but the Eagles held a 9-4 edge in corner kicks. The game featured 40 total fouls and three yellow cards.
Alicia Fernandez (6-5-1) recorded five saves in goal for the Golden Flashes, picking up her 28th career victory. Budani stopped 10 shots for the Eagles, who dropped their third straight.
Kent State returns to action next weekend when it begins its two-match road trip Friday, Oct. 6, at Northern Illinois University.
