Last evening the Kent State University athletics department brought together students, faculty, and community members to join in the fight against cancer. Fourteen athletic teams performed in the Fourth Annual Jock Jams competition in order to raise money for the American Cancer Societys Relay For Life. Audience members were asked to donate two dollars at the door and all of the proceeds from the event are donated directly to the American Cancer Society.
Once inside, the audience was treated to hilarious and creative routines put on by KSU student-athletes. The performances were as diverse as they were enjoyable. The gymnastics team put together a jazzy rendition of hit television theme songs, while the baseball team donned their best aerobic gear and danced to 80s workout music, and womens basketball put on a soulful medley of 60s and 70s classics. These and many other terrific routines took place, but in the end only three teams would be recognized for their performances.
Last years reigning champion womens track team, placed third with an energetic performance filled with impressive choreography. Mens basketball took second place honors with a series of hilarious skits that corresponded with songs that were dubbed together to create a crowd pleasing routine. While these teams were phenomenal, the night belonged to the football team. With a mix of incredible dancing, hilarious costumes, and high flying stunts, the gridiron stars prevailed as the best team of the night.
The teams were judged on creativity, choreography, originality, crowd involvement, and time management. The panel of judges included a staff partner from the American Cancer Society, the president of the All Campus Programming board, two athletic department employees, a professor from the college of business, and the Dean of Students.
While the night was filled with fun and entertainment, the highlight and theme of the evening was raising money for the American Cancer Society. Thus far, over $2,000 has been raised, but donations are still being collected.
The money raised will be donated to the Kent State University Relay For Life that will take place on April 29-30 beginning at 11:00 a.m. on the Liquid Crystal Track. The event is the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society. This Relay For Life will mark the fourth year that the event as been on the Kent State campus. At last years event, KSU faculty, students, staff raised over $74,000 for the fight against cancer.
