MUNCIE, Ind. For the second straight season, Ball State University spoiled the opening of Mid-American Conference play for the Kent State University women's soccer team as the Cardinals handed the Golden Flashes a 3-1 setback this afternoon (Sept. 22) at the Ball State Soccer Field.
The Cardinals (6-1-2, 1-0 MAC), who defeated the Flashes in Kent last year by a 2-0 score, won for the fifth straight time overall. Kent State (3-5-1, 0-1), meanwhile, dropped its second straight overall and is winless in its last 12 road contests (0-7-5).
Vandi Ogden gave Ball State an early 1-0 lead, scoring her second goal of the season just 8:01 into the contest. Kent State junior midfielder Lisa Kurz (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) answered back in the 22nd minute, putting in a rebound off the cross bar for her second score of the season and knotting the score at 1-1.
The Cardinals would go ahead for good late in the first half on Megan Ridley's penalty kick with just over four minutes remaining before intermission. Sarah Schumacker added an insurance goal, her team-leading fourth of the season, at 78:15 to seal the win.
Ball State outshot KSU 20-9 overall in the contest.
Rachel Murphy allowed just one goal and made three saves in picking up her sixth win for Ball State. Alicia Fernandez (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne) made six saves for the Golden Flashes.
Kent State continues its MAC-opening road trip on Sunday (Sept. 24) at Miami University.
