Soccer Wins Ninth Straight at Home, 2-1 Over CMU

KENT, Ohio The Kent State University women's soccer team ran its record home winning streak to nine matches with a 2-1 victory over Central Michigan University in Mid-American Conference action this afternoon (Sept. 29) at the KSU Soccer Field.
Sophomore Caitlin Hester (Worthington, Ohio/Thomas Worthington) and junior Lisa Kurz (Parma, Ohio/Normandy) each scored for the Golden Flashes (5-5-1, 2-1 MAC), who won for the second straight game overall.
Hester broke a scoreless tie with her third goal of the season just over nine minutes into the contest after getting a crossing pass from senior forward Danie Irwin (Avon, Ohio/Avon).
Kent State appeared to go ahead 2-0 on a Kurz goal a few minutes later that was waved off by a questionable offsides call.
Central Michigan (8-2-0, 1-2 MAC) tied the game at 1-1 in the 31st minute when Stephanie Martin got behind the defense and edged one past senior goalkeeper Alicia Fernandez (Columbus, Ohio/Worthington Kilbourne).
After having that earlier goal erased, Kurz put in the game-winner at 74:01. The scoring play came on a throw in by Hester to Irwin, who made a quick touch pass to Kurz. Kurz's shot was partially blocked by CMU keeper Anne Decker, but trickled past the goal line for the score.
However, the victory wasn't secured until Fernandez and the Flashes withstood a barrage by the Chippewas in the closing minutes. Fernandez made four saves in the final nine minutes, including back-to-back saves during a frantic CMU attack with just under six minutes remaining.
Fernandez finished with a career-high 12 saves, moving into second place on the school's career list. She improved to 5-5-1 on the year and earned her 27th career victory.
Decker made four saves for CMU.
The Golden Flashes will look to extend their winning streaks on Sunday, Oct. 1, when they host Eastern Michigan University at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Fernandez now has 223 saves... the game winner by Kurz was her second this season and fifth of her career... Kurz and Hester share the team lead in goals with three... Hester leads the team with eight points... Irwin's two assists were a career high... sixth-year head coach Rob Marinaro notched his 49th career win.
