Iowa City, Iowa - Three-time NCAA championship game qualifier and third ranked Duke University handed the Kent State field hockey team a 6-0 defeat Saturday afternoon (Sept. 2) at Grant Field. The Blue Devils used four goals in the final 35 minutes to improve to 3-0 on the year.
The Golden Flashes had several good looks at the goal, but could not cash one in.
"We had a few 3-on-1 opportunities but just couldn't get it in the goal," said Head Coach Kathleen Schanne.
The Devils got on the board eight minutes into the game on a goal from Marian Dickinson and added another with 11 minutes to play in the half on an assist from Dickinson. With no time remaining on the clock in the first half, Duke broke things open with Dickinson's second goal off of a corner.
Senior Elizabeth Lahey had a pair of shots on goal and Allison Kittelberger put one attempt on the cage. Golden Flash goalkeeper Linz Markwart (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) made seven saves in 51:44, while junior Kara Copeland (Virginia Beach, Va./Kempsville) made two saves in the final 18:16.
Duke outshot the Flashes 33-7 and took 12 more penalty corners. Dickinson finished with two goals and three assists.
"I'm proud of the way we played," said Schanne. "We stuck to our game plan. We frustrated them and restricted them from what they wanted to do."
The Golden Flashes (0-4, 0-0 MAC) will be back in action Wednesday (Sept. 6) with a matchup against Michigan in Ann Arbor.
