Field Hockey to Host Colgate Sunday

KENT, OHIO The Kent State University field hockey team returns home this Sunday (Sept. 10) for a non-conference showdown at Murphy Mellis Field with Colgate at 1 p.m. The Golden Flashes and Raiders have not met since 1996.
• Kent State (0-5) forced overtime with No. 20 Michigan Wednesday (Sept. 6) before falling 3-2 in Ann Arbor. The Golden Flashes scored twice in the final 11 minutes of regulation to send the game into OT.
• Colgate (1-2) will play a pair of games at Murphy Mellis Field this weekend. On Saturday, the Raiders take another MAC opponent in Central Michigan (2-1) at 1p.m.
• Four of Kent State's first five opponents were ranked in NFHCA Top 20. In the latest Poll, Duke was ranked #4, James Madison #13, Iowa #14 and Michigan #20. On Friday (Sept. 15) the Golden Flashes host #2 Wake Forest.
• Both Kent State and Colgate have faced Albany this seaon. Albany defeated KSU 2-0 on Aug. 28 in Kent, then claimed an 8-2 home victory over Colgate just two days later (Aug. 30).
• The Golden Flashes are led by four seniors: Linz Markwart, Elizabet Lahey, Liz Fettrow and Kate Perry, who are gunning for their fourth consecutive MAC regular season championship. The trio of Lahey, Fettrow and Perry have combined for 45 career goals.
• Linz Markwart is among MAC save leaders with 49 stops on the year. With 276 career saves, she is on pace to crack Kent State's top five in that category.
• The Golden Flashes have defeated the Raiders in three of five career meetings from 1991-1996. Colgate has taken two of the three matchups in Kent.
• Kent State is coached by Kathleen Schanne (Providence '97). In her first season as a head coach, Schanne is in her seventh consecutive season as a coach in the Mid-American Conference. She spent four seasons as an assistant at Miami and two as a grad assistant at KSU.
• Colgate is coached by Cathy Foto, who is in her 18th season. Foto has amassed 123 career victories with the Raiders.
• The Raiders returned 12 letterwinners and nine starters from a team that went 6-11 last season.
• With nine home matches remaining on the schedule, the Flashes look to post their 10th consecutive winning season at home. Over the previous nine seasons, Kent State boasts a record of 53-14 at home.
• Lauren Remkus leads the Raiders with five points on the season.
• Colgate was winless on the road last season and lost its only away game of 2006 thus far.
• Wednesday's two goals at Michigan were the most scored in a game by the Golden Flashes this season.
• Both Kent State and Colgate have dropped overtime games in the early season. In their season opener, Colgate fell to Radford 4-3 in extra time.
• Despite winning the last three Mid-American Conference regular season titles, Kent State was picked to finish fourth by conference coaches in the annual preseason poll.
