Bowling Green, Ohio
- No. 18 Bowling Green (13-2, 3-0 MAC) had little trouble winning its 28th consecutive game over a MAC opponent, as the Falcons cruised to a 74-52 victory over Kent State Wednesday night (Jan. 10) at Anderson Arena.
La'kia Stewart (Philadelphia, Pa.) led the Golden Flashes with 11 points and registered her fourth double-double of the season and 12th of her career with 10 rebounds.
Up 13-12 to start the game, the host Falcons went on a 10-0 run capped off by a Liz Honegger three-pointer from the left elbow to take a commanding 23-12 lead. BG went on another 10-0 run later in the half and held a 44-24 lead at the break. Honegger had 17 points by halftime, including three jumpers from behind the arc.
The Flashes opened the second half with an 8-2 spurt to cut the lead to 14 (46-32). However, KSU went the next five minutes and 30 seconds without a point and found itself in another 20-point hole.
"Bowling Green outplayed us in every aspect of the game," said Head Coach Bob Lindsay. "They played very hard and they don't turn the ball over very much. They're smart, they understand the game and they execute well."
"They have five players that are capable of being the leading scorer at any particular point," Lindsay added. "Other teams don't have that capabilty."
Carin Horne joined Honegger with a game-high 17 points. The Falcons scored 23 points off of turnovers to KSU's 10. The Flashes were held to just 33 percent shooting from the field in the opening half.
"You've got to take away teams' easy points," said Bowling Green coach Curt Miller on his team's defensive effort. "We stress no free points on offensive rebounds, no free points on our turnovers that lead directly to points and keep them off the foul line."
Mallorie Griffith connected on the fifth three-pointer of her career and finished with eight points and five rebounds. Kristin Peoples hit double figures with 10 points.
The Falcons have taken five straight from the Golden Flashes and have won their last 25 contests at Anderson Arena.
Kent State (6-8, 2-1 MAC) returns home to face MAC East foe Miami Saturday (Jan. 13) at the M.A.C. Center. Tip-off with the RedHawks (3-0 MAC) is slated for 2 p.m.
