Nelson records fifth shutout of the year in rain drenched match
KENT, Ohio - Behind the fifth shutout of the year from junior goalie Kris Nelson (Springboro, Ohio / Springboro), the Golden Flashes women's soccer team defeated visiting Miami University 2-0 in a rain drenched match at the KSU Soccer Field. Kent State won its second straight home game and went over .500 in the Mid-Conference with a 5-4-0 league record. The Golden Flashes improved to 7-8-1 on the year. The loss leaves the RedHawks at 3-5-1 in the MAC and 5-8-3 overall.
In the first half sophomore Catharine Marosszeky (Aurora, Ontario / Cardinal Center) started the scoring for Kent State in the 25th minute sending one into the back of the net off an assist from senior Kimberly Dimitroff (Oakville, Ontario / Iroquois Ridge). The goal was the third of the year for Marosszeky who took a cross from Dimitroff and shot from eight yards out on the right side.
Freshman L.A. Thoma (Alliance, Ohio / St. Thomas Aquinas) made it 2-0 in favor of KSU 10 minutes later when she flipped one in from the doorstep past Miami goalie Krista Pace. Sophomore Jackie Barath (Strongsville, Ohio / Strongsville) provided the assist on the score, lofting a beautiful cross to Thoma off a free kick from near midfield. Thoma is the ninth different player to score for the Golden Flashes this season as she produced her first career goal.
As they have all season, Kent State continued to control the game when establishing an early lead. The Golden Flashes are now 6-2-1 when scoring first this year.
Nelson's season high 11 saves kept the shutout intact for KSU which held a slight 17-16 edge in shots taken. Miami led the corner kicks 9-5 while Pace made eight saves in goal.
The Golden Flashes close out their home schedule on Sunday when they host Ball State at 1:00 pm. It will be senior day for the KSU Soccer program.
