Golden Flashes fall short to MAC front runner
KENT, Ohio - Ball State scored a pair of first half goals the way to a 2-1 defeat of the Kent State soccer team earlier today in a Mid-American Conference showdown at the KSU Soccer Field. The Golden Flashes dropped to 5-5-0 in the league and 7-9-1 overall while the Cardinals remained in first place in the league standings at 8-1-1 and 11-5-1 overall.
The Golden Flashes controlled the ball on their side of the field for the majority of the first half when the Cardinals swung the momentum onto their side in the final 10 minutes. Ball State would take a 1-0 lead at 38:29 when Emily Rein scored her sixth goal of the year from 10 yards out off a free kick from near midfield from Kristina Anderson.
A mere two minutes later, Sarah Schumacker extend the lead to 2-0 when she scored off a helper from Megan Ridley. Despite the pair of scores from the Cardinals, Kent State held a 6-5 margin in shots on goal for the first half.
Kent State kept the offensive pressure up and would close the gap in the 59th minute after freshman Josee Charron (Ottawa, Ontario / Gisele Lalonde) placed one into the right side of the net past BSU goalie Rachael Murphy. Senior Kimberly Dimitroff (Oakville, Ontario / Iroquois Ridge) knifed through the defense on the left side of the goal to set up Charron's second score of the season.
Unfortunately for the Golden Flashes that would be their last goal of the day as the Cardinals wound down the clock to seal the win.
Kent State out shot BSU 15-10 for the game, including a 7-2 difference in the second half and also led corner kicks 5-4. Junior Kris Nelson (Springboro, Ohio / Springboro) made three saves in goal for KSU while Murphy stopped eight for Ball State.
The Golden Flashes finish off the regular season on Thursday at Buffalo. The 2007 MAC Tournament begins next Sunday with the top four conference finishers hosting a first round match.
