Head Coach Bob Lindsay
Opening Statement:
“Well, we're in the 13th day of practice with five new players and three returning veterans... Scrimmaged yesterday against Gannon, Division II school, and for some of these players it was their first time in a Division I game. That was an enlightening experience for them. We're working from here. We got a starting point and were trying to get it to go upwards.
About the scrimmage against Gannon Oct. 28:
“We did some things that were ok I thought. Offensively we got the ball to the post and we scored out of the post pretty well. Shot the ball from the perimeter not bad. Our freshmen played like it was their first game. [Freshman guard] Stephanie Gibson... loosened up the rims a few times yesterday and set it up a few times for the other players to score. Overall, Steph did ok. She's learning. She's put in a difficult position because she will be expected to play a lot as a freshman, and she is going to have to log a lot of minutes against some pretty good kids so that is a challenge for her.
About Gibson playing point guard:
“She's going to play. She's just not going to show up and play it safe, she is going to play. She's going to miss some shots and there's going to be some times she looks like a freshman. That's the growing part of the game. She's going to gain some experience and hopefully that will help her become a better player and help her be a better player over the next three [years].
About Gibson's Strengths:
“She's best suited to run a game that goes up and down the floor. That's what she likes to do and that is what she has done the most of as a player [in high school at North Canton Hoover]. Her biggest challenge as a player right now is to add some balance to her game: be able to play in the half court and be able to understand situations on how to run a team and how to communicate with her teammates. That's going to take some time for her because there are aspects of that she is not used to doing right now and it will take us some time.”
On a game plan for the season:
“Over the past couple of years we have had so many injuries and so many things that have put our personnel in flux that we have had to change things. I don't think it is a system we are trying to run but we are trying to design a system around the players that we have currently available.”
On the challenge of no seniors on this year's squad:
“Every team is different... I think the challenge of the game is to put together a game plan and a team and an idea and a concept and a philosophy that can be successful year in and year out. When your down players and you are struggling to find an answer, the bottom line will be at the end of the year and if this team improves, whether these players have improved individually and they are able to play through a lot of things and play hard.”
Freshman Guard Stephanie Gibson
On the transition from high school to college:
“More going from the high school level to the college level it is totally different. I probably need to do more on communication-wise and as I look at upperclassmen, [junior Ashley Harkins and sophomore Rachel Bennett], to help me out.”
On going up against Graduate Assistant Coach and former KSU guard Kristin Peoples in practice:
“She is a fantastic point guard and I have looked up to her when I came to games and watched her play last year . So now everyday in practice I go up against her is offensive drills and defensive drills. It is a challenge every day, I am not going to lie, but I am only going to get better from her. She knows the game and she will teach me all the way though the year so I am really looking forward to it.
