It is never an easy task trying to pay for college, with loans often running into the tens of thousands of dollars by the time a typical college student graduates with his bachelor's degree. The recent tuition freeze by the state has helped, but costs can still be overwhelming for many.
This is why the Kent State Athletic Department, with the help of a generous donation, raffled off five scholarships this past football season for any Kent State student in attendance at Dix Stadium. The scholarship was open to part-time and full-time students of all eight Kent State campuses and to students of all degrees.
Every student who flashed his or her I.D. at the gate received a raffle ticket, with the winning ticket drawn at halftime. In the first four home games, $2,000 scholarships were given out followed by a $5,000 one in the season finale.
Autumn Bowser, 22, a junior nursing major from Salem, Ohio, won the first raffle at the September 15 home game against Delaware State.
“I am very appreciative because I pay for my tuition myself so winning this scholarship will really help me out,” Bowser said. “I'm so excited that I was one of the winners! Many thanks to the Athletic Department!”
In the October 6 game against Miami, Braydon Micaletti, 18, became the second tuition voucher winner. A freshman sports administration major from New Castle, Pennsylvania, Micaletti was grateful for the award.
“I feel real lucky to receive this award,” he said. “I would like to thank everyone who made this possible.”
During the Bowling Green game on October 20, Netsihet Tessema became the third member of the scholarship club. Tessema, 21, is an integrated health sciences and pre-pharmacy major who hails from Addis-Ababa, Ethiopa. She is also a member of Kent African Students Association.
“I won this scholarship at a point where I needed some money to be in school so it really meant a whole lot,” Tessema said. “Thanks to the athletic department and thanks to the individual donor.”
Thomas LaMarca, 23, a senior nursing major from Cleveland, won the last of the four $2,000 scholarships during the October 27 game against Central Michigan.
“This scholarship really helped me out,” LaMarca said. “Being in the last year of school with money starting to become scarce it helped me not having to take out a loan and relieved some stress built on not knowing how I would pay for another semester.”
Then in the season finale against Buffalo on November 24, Brett Hodros, 21, won the $5,000 grand scholarship. A junior secondary education major with an emphasis on history, the New Middletown, Ohio native is also a member of the Dodgeball Club.
“This scholarship means everything to me,” Hodros said. “I am the third and final son in my family to go to school and I know my parents struggled to help pay for college for all three of us. But, together we have done what we could do to get all three of us to go to college and graduate. This scholarship helps out my family so much and I greatly appreciate this.”
