Ten Questions with Charlotte Muller
1. You were a captain last season. What if anything do you plan on changing this season to improve the team?
I think our communication on and off the field. I think our team could definitely improve on talking. Our results could be better that way. Most of the time, the team just assumes people know what we want them to do. We need to talk more about where people should be in positions on the field. Off the field, we should communicate what we expect from our teammates.
2. Being named to the All- MAC Team this past season, what did that mean for you?
It's cool to get personal recognition, but it's a team effort. It's not just me taking all the honors. You can see that even though we didn't have the best season, we still have people making the first team and second team. That kind of tells how your team works. Me scoring goals is not just because I did it myself. It's because we as a team get a corner or we get the ball upfront. I see it as a team effort.
3. There is good freshman class coming up for this season. Do you believe there are spots in the lineup where they can be utilized right away?
Right now we have a lot of injuries, so hopefully they will be back to play. I think it's always good to have a big group coming in, because if everyone is ready to play at any position, you don't always have to rely on the group of people who are always playing. You can rotate, which will help the team so much. I think it's awesome and I'm really excited.
4. With this upcoming season being your senior year, what are your personal goals and team goals for the season?
I just want to get the team back into a championship race. This past year we ended in the bottom. We didn't even get the regular title. I want to see us perform against Michigan again. In the regular season I want to work to be more consistent, and I think we are working hard to achieve that goal. I would love to go to the NCAA's, but I am looking at my goals in parts.
5. Did you always know you wanted to play field hockey at Kent State? How did you end up here?
I'm an international student and I definitely did not know I was going to play field hockey in the United States. I've been playing since I was six years old on club teams. When I came out of high school, I traveled for a year, came back home to Holland and then I went to Law School for a year. Halfway through the year I knew I didn't want to stay back home. One of my teammates from home who left came here to Kent State, and she knew I would fit in on the team. She gave my information to the coaching staff and they came over to Holland to watch me play along with a couple of other girls and that's how it started. I didn't know, but when I found out, I was like, yes! I want to do it!
6. Your upcoming season will be the second year for your current coaching staff. Do you think things will be any different this season?
Yes, I think last year was hard because we got an entire new staff, so it's hard to just pick up an entire team that has been together. We did well; we worked hard even though the results weren't where we wanted them to be. Our coaching staff is getting used to us and we are getting used to them. I'm positive about the future.
7. What was your most memorable moment from your club or college field hockey years?
In club back home, we won the Dutch National Championship when I was 16 and I won when I was home for a year we won the National Championship on an adult level.
At Kent State, I would have to say when we beat Michigan State, that's a big rival and it was just awesome. They've always been ahead of us and we beat them. Winning the regular season my freshman and sophomore season, that felt good too.
8. Who do you feel are the leaders out on the field and in the locker room? Why? And or what have they done to better the team?
It's always been tradition that our senior class steps up because they have the experience. We look up to them. Even if you do not have as much playing time, you might be the voice for the team. Always be there support the team. Every member of the team, even the incoming freshmen have their own role; it could be the entertainer, supporter, or the communicator. This spring we've been doing a lot of leadership things to get to know each other as friends and teammates.
9. Who is your craziest or most fun teammate and why?
We have a lot of characters. Anna McComb, she's funny. Libby Lame, we always call her albino, she's so white. She always has funny comments that seem to come out of nowhere. I feel like our team is a combination of totally different characters. Everyone has something that characterizes them, and it makes it fun.
10. What is something about Kent State Field Hockey that you will take with you when you leave Kent State?
It would definitely be the family unit. When you come here you are embraced by your teammates. The minute you are here, it's the Kent family unit. It's your family away from home, and wherever I go I want to be open and supportive just like my teammates are. Wherever I live, if it's in Europe, the States, or wherever, I want to be the person that I was here and be a friend to everyone.
