Senior Brittney Robinson (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone) used her prowess as a pitcher and a hitter to lead the Kent State Golden Flashes to an 8-0 victory in game #2 and a split of a Mid-American Conference doubleheader with the visiting Western Michigan University Broncos on Friday (4/20) afternoon at the Diamond at Dix in Kent, Ohio.
Robinson (10-8 overall, 4-1 MAC) tossed the second perfect game in KSU softball history and smacked two hits, including a three-run home run, in three at bats versus the Broncos. Robinson struck out nine of the 15 batters she faced in the five inning game that was shortened because KSU had an eight run lead after the top of the fifth.
Kent State scored five times in the bottom of the second with Robinson's three-run blast, which landed on the asphalt walkway around the outside of Dix Stadium next to the Flashes' softball field, being the big hit.
The Flashes added three runs in the bottom of the third as senior second baseman Jessica Kramb (Findlay, Ohio/St. Wendelin) hit an RBI single and junior shortstop Jessica Toocheck (Medina, Ohio/Medina) followed with a two-RBI single to rightfield. Kramb finished the game with a pair of hits in two at bats with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Toocheck totaled three RBI in the victory.
Peggie Stitz tossed the first perfect game in Kent State softball history when she blanked Ohio Northern University 7-0 in the second game of a doubleheader on April 4, 1983.
Western Michigan won the first game as the Broncos hit back-to-back solo home runs in the top of the fourth to take a 2-0 lead en route to a 3-1 win.
Freshman pitcher Kylie Reynolds (Greesnboro, Ga./Morgan County) suffered her sixth loss of the season allowing three earned runs while striking out 13 in seven innings. Reynolds' strikeout total raises her season total to 202 making her the second pitcher in Kent State history to surpass the 200 strikeout plateau in one season. Robinson became the first to do so last season as she totaled 423 k's.
Kent State scored its lone run as freshman Lauren Brocklehurst (Medina, Ohio/Medina), who was pinch running for Alyssa Frobase (Curtice, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) who had singled, crossed home plate on a double by junior outfielder Kim Hamilton (Cave Junction, Oregon/Illinois Valley).
Kent State (22-15 overall, 8-2 MAC) hosts MAC foe Northern Illinois University for a single game at 2 p.m. on Saturday (4/21).
