Kent State's softball team swept a doubleheader with Mid-American Conference foe, the University of Buffalo, by scores of 10-0 and 5-1 to maintain the Golden Flashes standing atop the MAC at 12-2.
In the first game, freshman pitcher Kylie Reynolds (Greensboro, Ga./Morgan County) tossed a no-hitter at the Bulls in game one as KSU pounded out 12 hits and scored 10 runs in five innings. Reynolds struck out nine of the first ten batters she faced and finished with 13 strikeouts of the 16 batters she faced in five innings. She was a second inning walk away from throwing a perfect game. She now has a 12-6 overall record, 6-1 in the MAC, with 230 strikeouts in 134.2 innings.
Offensively, Kent State was led by junior outfielders Kim Hamilton (Cave Junction, Oregon/Illinois Valley) and Corey Houk (Hebron, Ohio/Lakewood) and freshman catcher Amy Hair (Massillon, Ohio/Perry) who each had a pair of hits and scored a run and drove in a run versus the Bulls. Junior shortstop Jessica Toocheck (Medina, Ohio/Medina) had a pair of RBI and scored two runs for KSU as she belted a two-run home run in the top of the fourth. Junior first baseman Jamie Fitzpatrick (Cartersville, Georgia/Woodland) followed two batters later with a two-run blast of her own in the Flashes' seven-run fourth inning. Fitzpatrick's clout moves her into first place on the Kent State all-time career list for home runs with 27. It also ties her single season home run record (12) which she set last year.
In the nightcap, KSU scored in the top of the second inning as Hamilton doubled with two runners on and came all the way around to score for a 3-0 Flashes lead.
Kent added to its advantage with a single run in the top of the fifth as Fitzpatrick, who had smacked a leadoff double, scored on a single by Houk for a 4-0 lead.
Houk scored the Flashes' final run when she reached on a one-out single and crossed homeplate on an RBI double by senior third baseman Megan Verde (Massillon, Ohio/Jackson).
Buffalo scored a single run in the bottom of the seventh as the Bulls bunched a trio of hits against senior pitcher Brittney Robinson (LaGrange, Ohio/Keystone). Robinson raised her record to 11-8 overall, 5-1 in the MAC.
Kent State (26-15, 12-2 MAC) host the University of Pittsburgh in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 2.
