Ashby Named Director of Athletic Communications

- Alan Ashby, who has more than a decade of experience in collegiate athletics, has been named the Director of Athletic Communications at Kent State University. The hiring was announced by KSU Director of Athletics Laing Kennedy on Wednesday. Ashby will assume his role at Kent State beginning on Monday, May 21.
Ashby will oversee all of the media relations efforts for Golden Flashes athletics while serving as the primary contact for football.
"We are pleased to add someone of Alan's caliber to our department," Kennedy said. "The passion and enthusiasm he brings to Kent State will help our media relations efforts on all fronts."
A native of Lynchburg, Va., Ashby has spent the past eight years in the Cleveland State Sports Information Office, holding the title of Assistant SID for six years before being promoted to Associate in the fall of 2005.
While at CSU, Ashby directed the media relations efforts for women's basketball, volleyball, softball, men's and women's golf and fencing. He was responsible for coordinating the content development for the athletic department's web site (CSUVikings.com) while also being heavily involved in creating and designing all of the department's publications.
Additionally, he served as the Media Coordinator for the 2006 NCAA Men's Golf Central Regional and was the Assistant Media Coordinator for the 2007 NCAA Women's Final Four, the 2006 NCAA Women's Basketball Cleveland Regional and the NCAA Men's Basketball first and second round games that were played at CSU in both 2000 and 2005.
A 1996 graduate of the University of Virginia, Ashby served as Sports Information Intern (1996-98) and Assistant SID (1998-99) at Penn State before joining the CSU athletic department in the summer of 1999.
The winner of the American Volleyball Coaches Association Grant Burger Media Award in 2006 (Midwest Region), Ashby is also the recipient of numerous College Sports Information Directors of America Citations for Excellence in Publications. A member of CoSIDA since 1996, he served on the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Committee as a district coordinator for three years.
