Philadelphia, Pa. - Senior captain Charlotte Muller scored the game's only goal with less than three minutes to play as Kent State (1-2) captured its first victory of the year over Lock Haven (1-2) Saturday (Sept. 1) at the Temple Invitational. Senior goalkeeper Kara Copeland and the Golden Flash defense posted their first shutout of the season.
"We're getting better every game," Head Coach Kathleen Schanne said. "We missed some scoring opportunities in the first half, but did an outstanding job of controlling the ball. And when we did lose possession, the defense showed great patience in winning the ball back the right way."
The Blue and Gold's only penalty corner play of the second half came with just three minutes remaining. The combination of Muller, Rachel Miller, Allison Kittleberger and Stephanie Bernthal made it count, giving the Flashes a 1-0 lead.
Miller, a freshman midfielder, tallied her first collegiate assist with a pass back to Muller. Kittelberger began the play with an insert to Bernthal.
The Eagles earned a penalty corner of their own with no time left on the clock, but Lock Haven's shot sailed wide to end the game.
Junior forward Natalie Barrett took two shots on goal, but her consecutive goal streak ended at four games.
Each team took six shots apiece, while the Flashes earned seven penalty corners to the Eagles' four. KSU had not faced Lock Haven since 1996.
The Golden Flashes will take on Penn Sunday (Sept. 2) at 1 p.m. in day two of the Temple Invitational. The Quakers opened their season Saturday with a 4-2 loss against Temple.
"Our improved play really makes us look forward to tomorrow's game," Schanne added.
