KENT, Ohio - In the midst of a strong 10-4 start to the 2008 field hockey season, Kent State Athletic Director Laing Kennedy recently announced a contract extension for Head Coach Kathleen Schanne. The 2007 MAC Coach of the Year, Schanne has put her program in a position to be among the elite teams in the nation, with five regular season games remaining.
Schanne was previously under contract through the end of the current school year, but the new contract will extend her time in Kent through 2012.
"Kathleen has done an outstanding job since taking over the program," Kennedy said. "She's exceeded our expectations in the quality of her recruiting and the performance of her student-athletes in the classroom, while at the same time contending for conference titles and postseason opportunities."
In 2007, Schanne guided Kent State to one of its biggest turnaround seasons in school history. The Golden Flashes doubled their regular season win total from 2006 and more than doubled their conference win total.
"This contract extension is an affirmation to the vision and philosophy of our coaching staff," Schanne said. "Our commitment to develop and recruit student-athletes is a primary focus and this extension enables us to continue the recruiting efforts nationally and internationally. Personally, I am thrilled and honored to continue in the leadership position of the Kent State University field hockey program"
KSU is currently riding a four-game winning streak, while sitting atop the MAC standings at 5-1. Three of the Flashes losses have come on the road against ranked opponents. Kent State was picked to win the conference in the the 2008 preseason coaches poll.
The third-year head coach also spent two seasons as a graduate assistant at Kent State (2000-01) before serving as an assistant coach at Miami for four seasons. The Golden Flashes look to give Schanne her 30th career win on Friday at Central Michigan.
