Five Flashes Earn MAC Academic Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The 2008 Mid-American Conference regular season and MAC Field Hockey Tournament champions were recognized for their efforts in the classroom Tuesday (Dec. 9) as five Kent State players earned spots on the Academic All-MAC Teams.
Two-time selection Allison Kittelberger was joined on the Academic All-MAC Team by Stephanie Bernthal and Laurie Wilkins. MaryKate Hanosek and Katie George were named to the Academic Honorable Mention Team.
Kittelberger a junior midfielder, carries a 3.94 grade point average as a business marketing major. She has now earned spots on the all-conference team and the academic all-confence team in each of the past two seasons. This season she finished third in the MAC with 11 assists and was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team.
Bernthal, a senior back, completed her undergraduate studies as a psychology major with a 3.74 GPA and is currently pursuing a master's degree. The All-MAC First Team selection finished with six assists out of the backfield. Leading a defense that allowed just 1.18 goals per game, Bernthal also earned a spot on the All-West Region Team.
Wilkins, a junior forward carries a 3.55 GPA as an early childhood education major. The Toledo native finished third on the team with seven assists and was named to the All-MAC Second Team. Wilkins has also scored 12 career goals.
George, a sophomore midfielder, carries a 3.68 GPA as a business management major. She started in 21 games and had one assist. George was also named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic Squad following the 2007 season.
Hanosek, a senior English major, carries a 3.49 GPA. Playing all 22 games at back, she helped the Golden Flashes post six shutouts. Hanosek played in 77 career games and has been named NFHCA's National Academic Squad twice.
At 17-5, Kent State posted its best winning percentage since 2000 and was ranked 19th in the final NFHCA Coaches' Poll. The Golden Flashes won their ninth MAC regular season title and eighth MAC Tournament crown in 2008.
