Barrett, Meixner Earn Academic All-District Honors

KENT, Ohio - Kent State sophomore gymnast Lydia Barrett and senior women's golfer Kira Meixner have been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV Second Team which was released on Thursday (May 22) by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
A Rochester, N.Y. native, Barrett carries a 3.974 GPA in integrated health sciences. This past year, she earned All-Mid-American Conference First Team honors after capturing her first individual title, tying two others for the top spot on bars at the 2008 MAC Championships with a score of 9.750. She also placed fifth on floor (9.775) and tied for 12th on vault (9.750) to help the Golden Flashes claim the MAC title. Barrett turned in a career-high routine of 9.775 on bars at the Sweetheart Invitational, while receiving a season-high vault score of 9.775 at the same meet. She registered a season-high mark of 9.825 on floor against Bowling Green.
“We feel great for Lydia because she obviously takes her academics extremely seriously,” head gymnastics coach Brice Biggin said. “She's a great role model in the gym both academically and athletically. She has stepped us so strong for us this year. We feel great for her and are honored that her accomplishments make our program look good as well.”
Meixner carded a 75.0 stroke average on the season, helping the nationally-ranked Flashes claim their 10th consecutive MAC title and their eighth straight NCAA Regional bid. A native of Richmond, British Columbia, she turned in six top 10 finishes on the year, including three in the top three (one victory). Ranked 61st in the country by Golfweek, she was named the 2008 MAC Golfer of the Year in addition to earning first team All-MAC accolades for the third time. She fired a school record 66 en route to winning Lady Northern Invitational last fall - the fourth title of her career. A NGCA All-Scholar Team member in 2005, '06 & '07, she was named the 2007 Canadian Women's Amateur of the Year and competed for team Canada at the 2006 Women's World Amateur Team Championships. Meixner posted a 9.757 GPA in magazine journalism.
“When you look at Kira's contributions over the past four years, she has been a great ambassador not only for our golf program but for the University as well,” head women's golf coach Mike Morrow said. “It's been a pleasure having someone of Kira's character on our team - she's truly been a model student-athlete.”
To be nominated for the Academic All-America team, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve on their team with a 3.20 cumulative grade point average. The District IV teams are compiled from NCAA Division I women's bowling, women's crew, men's and women's fencing, women's field hockey, men's and women's golf, men's and women's gymnastics, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's rifle, men's and women's skiing, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis, men's volleyball, men's and women's water polo and men's wrestling teams from Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
