KENT, Ohio – The Kent State Blue team took advantage of seven errors by the Kent State Gold team in a 7-4 win Monday afternoon at Schoonover Stadium.
Redshirt junior Brennen Glass picked up the win with junior Brett Weibley recorded the save for the Blue team. Redshirt sophomore Cory Martin took the loss for Gold.
“The Gold team just had too many errors,” said head coach Scott Stricklin after the game. “The Blue team took advantage. In this game, we had a lot of players out of position and that contributed to it but we have to clean things up.
“But, It was fun to put the uniform on again,” added Stricklin.
After a scoreless first inning, freshman Jason Bagoly got the Blue team started when he roped a double to right-center and scored on redshirt junior Jared Bartholomew's single. On the throw home to try to throw out Bagoly, Bartholomew advanced to second and advanced to third on Weibley's groundout. Redshirt sophomore Corey Sayers made it 2-0 on an RBI single to right field.
The story of the early going though was Blue's starting pitcher, junior Kyle Hallock. Hallock was perfect through the first four innings. Blue added another run to in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead.
“I was encouraged by the starting pitchers. David Starn and Kyle Hallock threw very well and threw a lot of strikes,” said Stricklin.
In the bottom of the fifth, Gold fought back and tied the game. With one out, sophomore David Lyon ended Hallock's perfect bid with a single to left and advanced to second on a ground out. With two outs, sophomore Kyle McMillen grounded a ball up the middle and beat the throw to first. Lyon advanced to third and scored on the throw to first for Gold's first run of the game. The next batter, freshman George Roberts, tied the game with a two-run shot to left field.
In the top of the sixth, three errors by Gold led to three runs by Blue, two of which were unearned. Bartholomew led the inning off with a walk and stole second. He then swiped third and scored when the ball went into left field on the third baseman's fielding error.
In the next at-bat, Weibley singled, advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt that sailed over the first baseman's head, went to third when freshman Casey Wilson reached on an error and scored on freshman Nick Hamilton's RBI groundout. Wilson stole a base and scored on Hindel's RBI single.
Gold answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the sixth when redshirt sophomore Joe Koch tripled to left to leadoff the inning and scored on 5th-year senior Jared Humphreys single.
Blue added an insurance run in the top of the seventh to take a 7-4 lead. Gold brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the bottom of the inning, but a pop up and a groundout ended the game.
“We just need to make the routine plays and be a little cleaner defensively and that is a different game,” said Stricklin. “It's early and I'm happy guys are playing hard and competing.”
