Golf Claims School's First Ohio Athletic Conference Title
Prior to joining the Mid-American Conference in 1951, Kent State was a member of the Ohio Athletic Conference from 1932-51. In 1934, the men's golf team won the school's first conference title as a part of the OAC, posting a perfect 6-0 record in head-to-head competition against Akron, Mount Union and Wooster, squaring off against each school twice. (The advent of tournament play did not occur until after World War II.)
Coached by Joseph Begala (center of photo), the prowess of the
1934 golf team was an early sign of the great things to come for
what has been one of Kent State's most successful programs
through the years.
