Kent State (4-3 overall, 1-0 MAC) travels to Bowling Green, Ohio for a 4 p.m meet with the host Bowling Green State University Falcons on Saturday (2/7).
The Golden Flashes enter the meet without the services of one of their top gymnasts, sophomore Christina Lenny (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) who will have a bone scan done to determine if she has a pair of stress fractures. Lenny currently ranks second in the Mid-American Conference in the vault and third in the all-around. She also ranks fifth regionally and 23rd nationally on vault.
“We know we have the ability regardless of who's in there,” said Head Coach Brice Biggin. “We have the talent and the depth to compete and win each event.”
Without Lenny, Kent State will look to seniors Rachel Stuck (Erie Pa./Fairview), Laci Hendress (Wolcott, Ind./Tri County), Stacey Kalberg (Naperville, Ill./Neuqua Valley), and Amanda St. John (Avon, Ohio/Avon), juniors Brittany Kopp (Cleveland, Ohio/Holy Name), Lydia Barrett (Rochester, N.Y./Penfield), Samantha Heydlauff (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea), and Carly Conroy (North Jackson, Ohio/Jackson-Milton), and sophomore Christine Abou-Mitri (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) to lead the way against the Falcons.
“Each of these athletes is capable of doing very well and putting up a big score,” said Biggin. “We need to them to stay focused and be confident in their routines to perform well.”
The Golden Flashes will also rely upon several underclassmen to show that they are ready to compete and succeed.
“We have a team that's very talented and very deep,” said Biggin. “Maybe this is a good time for them to realize that I need to step up and do my part. That's why they train hard. So, I am fully expecting us to go out and have a very successful meet.”
