Kent State Second In Excellence In Management Standings

KENT, Ohio - Heading into his 16th year as Kent State's Director of Athletics, Laing Kennedy has always been a firm believer in building a comprehensive program that wins championships while being fiscally responsible at the same time.
That philosophy was validated this week with the release of the 2009 Excellence in Management Cup, presented by Texas A & M's Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics (LSIA). Kent State ranked second in the nation behind only Utah State out of the Western Athletic Conference. Rounding out the top five were Louisiana Tech, Akron and BYU.
“To have an outside organization commend our university's financial staff and how we do our athletic business is a great honor and tremendous recognition that our entire university can share in,” Kennedy said. “This validates how we run our program not only from an athletic point of view, but from a business perspective as well.”
The Cup ranks athletic departments in accordance to financial expenditures, rewarding departments that win the most conference and national championships, while at the same time keeping expenditures low.
The scores are calculated in a formula that accounts for total athletic department spending, number of sports played and the number of conference and national championships won by each Football Bowl Subdivision university.
During the 2008-09 school year, eight Golden Flash teams combined to win a total of 10 Mid-American Conference championships (six tournament, four regular season) as KSU earned its fourth Reese Trophy for overall men's athletic excellence in the conference.
