Kent State Sports Network
7/22/2009 12:00:00 AM | General
From the opening kickoff until the final horn sounds, all of the excitement of Golden Flashes football can be heard across Northeast Ohio on the Kent State ISP Sports Network thanks to a new five-year partnership with Akron-based WNIR 100.1 FM that was announced in June of 2007. Now in his 11th year in the booth, “Touchdown” Tom Linder is in his second season as play-by-play announcer after sliding over from the analyst chair in 2008. New to the booth for 2009 is color analyst Rob Polinsky Jr. And for the fifth straight season, sideline reporter - and Kent State alum - Ty Linder rounds out the crew.
Tom Linder will also call KSU men's basketball action in addition to hosting the weekly Inside Kent State Sports radio show Thursday evenings at Water Street Tavern in downtown Kent. His previous work includes calling high school football games on WRGM radio and WMFD television in Mansfield, Ohio. The Bowling Green graduate and husband of KSU softball coach Karen Linder also was the head soccer and wrestling coach at Ashland University from
1988-94.
Polinsky joins the broadcast team full time after filling in as the play-by-play announcer for the season finale at Buffalo last year. Polinsky began broadcasting high school football in 1986 at WLKR in Norwalk, Ohio. During his career he has also done games at WLEC and Register TV News 41 in Sandusky. Since 1997, Polinsky has been at WEOL AM 930 in Elyria. In addition to high school football he has broadcast basketball, baseball and softball. A former speech and drama student of Tom Linder's at St. Paul High School, Polinsky resides in Elyria.
Ty Linder, who earned his bachelor's degree in May of 2006 from Kent State, added women¹s basketball play-by-play duties to his resume in 2008-09 when he joined the KSU Athletic Department in a full time capacity as an assistant in the Flashes' broadcast and video operations area. In addition
to his sideline responsibilities, Linder also previously filled in on KSU basketball broadcasts, was a television announcer for the sports staff at TV-2 and handles the public address and radio duties at KSU baseball games. He also called high school football and wrestling contests on radio.
Before the start of each game, Tom Linder will set the stage with a 60-minute pregame show that will air live from outside of Dix Stadium prior to home games and from the radio booth on the road. He will then recap all of the action with a 30-minute postgame show, including highlights, stats
and comments from the coaches, following the game.
In addition to the Kent State ISP Sports Network, the Golden Flashes will once again make numerous appearances on television in 2008. KSU's tilt at
Boston College will be shown on ESPN360.com, while the season finale against Buffalo could air on either ESPN2 or ESPN360.com. While the Fox Sports Net broadcast schedule has yet to be set as of press time, fans can rest assured that Kent State will appear on television up to two more times during the season.
